Obiettivi formativi

The course aims to fulfill the educational objectives of the MA course in Philosophy, by letting the students be able to read philosophical texts in detail, know and present the main arguemnts in favor and against the scrutinized theories and perspectives, and critically discuss them. By so doing, the students will also be able both to present such theories for didactic aims, while looking at interdisciplinary connections with other themes (especially related to cognitive sciences) and to master the technology needed for such presentations.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Students should be able to scrutinize philosophical texts written in English, to know and present the main arguments in favour of the examined theories and views, and to know how to discuss them critically. This will be accomplished via i) oral examinations, ii) students' presentations during the course, iii) quality of the students' questions on the scrutinized texts.

Programma

The course will critically assess Sainsbury's and Tye's new originalist theory of concepts. After introducing the constraints and requirements that any theory of concepts must comply with and the main theories of concepts (the classical theory, the prototype theory, the atomistic theory, the inferentialist theories, the capacity theories), and presenting the puzzles that any theory of concepts must solve, the course will discuss the 2012 book where Sainsbury and Tye originally present their own theory.

Non-attendees: oral examination concerning the texts recommended in bibliography. Attendees: 1) either oral examination on the non-scrutinized texts in bibliography or essay (max 3000 words) on some of the course's arguments, plus 2) evaluation of written questions and presentations on the students' part concerning the scrutinized text. The evaluation (min 18/30 max 30 cum laude /30) will depend on three factors, in a non-exclusive alternative: i) the students' preparation on the programmed texts and their ability to face them critically, ii) their capacity to make an oral presentation on a paper, iii) their capacity to ask pertinent and penetrating questions on the featured texts. This will make it possible to test students' ability both with respect to the learning objectives and with respect to the expected results. Evaluation will be given on a mark scale starting from 30 (cum laude). If the coronavirus emergency will surface again, exams will be moved online onto the webex platform.
