Obiettivi formativi

In line with the overall learning objectives of the MA program in Philosophy, this course will provide:

  • knowledge of classical texts in the history of scientific and philosophical thought;
  • understanding and contextualization of each text in its historical and theoretical dimensions, to be achieved through guided reading, discussion, and individual study;
  • development of comprehension and critical skills in the analysis of the texts, especially of the ability to recognize and assess philosophical arguments and argumentative styles in them.

  • conoscenza di testi classici del pensiero scientifico e filosofico;
  • comprensione e inquadramento di ciascun testo nella sua dimensione storica e teorica, attraverso la lettura guidata, la discussione e lo studio individuale;

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

By the end of this course, students should successfully be able to:

  • display a rudimentary knowledge of the early history of 20th century philosophy of space and time.
  • identify philosophical and conceptual issues that lurk behind scientific results.
  • show an understanding of the early history of philosophy of science as separate discipline within philosophy more in general

Programma

The standard view of acceptable scientific theories is that they must be able to pass empirical tests, with "crucial experiments" providing conclusive evidence for a theory over a competing one. However, in 1906 the French physicists Pierre Duhem in his The aim and structure of physical theory challenged this view by arguing that the falsification of a physical theory is necessarily ambiguous, and therefore there are no such things as 'crucial experiments'. Some decades later W. V. Quine Two Dogmas of Empiricism endorsed 'Duhemian holism' extending it to the whole science. As a consequence, the debate over evidential holism is commonly referred to as the Duhem-Quine thesis. As a result, the debate over evidential holism is commonly referred to as the Duhem-Quine thesis. This course aims to question whether the 'Duhem thesis' is comparable to the 'Quine thesis' by carefully examining Duhem's The Aim and Structure of Physical Theory and its historical context. By gaining a deeper understanding of these differences, we can shed light on the ongoing debate over evidential holism and its implications for scientific practice.

The assessment will consist of the following components:

  1. Delivering an oral presentation during the course, which will account for 30% of the final grade.
  2. Passing an online quiz, at the end of the term, with a minimum score of 70%.
  3. Writing an assignment of approximately 5,000-6,000 words, which will account for 70% of the final grade.

For students who are not attending the course, (1) and (2) will be substituted with an oral examination focused on the two mandatory readings.
