Programma

Logical empiricism (also known as "logical positivism") was one of the major philosophical movements the 20th century, and is largely considered to have shaped the field of contemporary analytic philosophy. The course will provide an overview of the movement from the period of its foulrishing around the Vienna Circle and the Berlin Group in the 1920s and 1930s to its further developments in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. Its characteristic theses will be discussed on the basis of texts by key figures such as Schlick, Carnap, Neurath, Reichenbach and Hempel touching on open philosophical issues including the status of logic, the conception of truth, the problem of induction, the unity of science, the mind-body problem.

The oral exam will test students' knowledge and understanding of the course materials, their capacity to situate the primary sources in their historical context and to analyze their philosophical contents, the ability to engage with the philosophical problems discussed during the course in a critical way, the acquisition of argumentative skills.

The grade from 1/30 to a maximum of 30/30 cum laude will depend for its 70% on the oral exam and for its 30% on an oral presentation on a selected topic.

The exam materials will be the same for those who cannot attend classes.
