Obiettivi formativi
The course aims to introduce students to the debate on doxastic voluntarsim. In addition to claryfing the key concepts in this discussion, the course will show how one should approach a philosophical debate.
L'insegnamento si propone di fornire un'introduzione al dibattito attorno al volontarsimo doxastico. Oltre a chiarirne i concetti chiave, l'insegnamento mostrerà agli studenti come orientarsi all'interno di un dibattito filosofico.

Doxastic voluntarsim
The debate on doxastic voluntarism concerns whether we have control over our beliefs. Can we decide what to belief? Or is belief determined by mechanisms that are not in our control? We will consider influential papers that have argued against doxastic voluntarism and have provided different account of the reasons why doxastic involuntarism is instead true. We will also consider classical and recent defenders of voluntarism. Furthermore, we will give attention to the consequences of this debate on other issues, such as epistemic normativity and the possibility of pragmatic reasons for belief. The course will focus on both classic and more recent figures (Pascal, James, Williams, Bennett, Hyeronimi, etc.).
Volontarsimo dossastico
Il dibattito sul volontarismo doxastico riguarda la questione se sia possibile controllare le nostre credenze. Possiamo decidere cosa credere? La credenza è forse determinata da meccanismi che non possiamo controllare? Prenderemo in considerazione articoli che hanno argomentato contro il volontarismo doxastico, offrendo diverse spiegazioni del perchè l'involontarismo doxastico sia invece corretto. Vedremo anche come il volontarismo sia stato invece difeso da alcuni autori classici e contemporanei. Inoltre, analizzeremo le conseguenze di questo dibattito su altre questioni, come la normatività epistemica e la possibilità di identificare ragioni pratiche per la credenza. L'insegnamento si concentrerà sia su figure classiche che su autori contemporanei (Pascal, James, Williams, Bennett, Hyeronimi, ecc.)

The course will consists of lectures and seminars.
L'insegnamento sarà composto in parte da lezioni frontali e in parte da incontri di carattere seminariale.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
The exam will have a written and an oral part. Students will have to write a short paper (approx. 4.000 words) on themes and texts discussed in class. Additionally, there will be an oral exam on the contents of the lectures and on the texts indicated in the bibliography.
L'esame avrà una parte scritta e una parte orale. Gli studenti dovranno preparare un breve elaborato scritto (circa 4.000 parole) su problemi e testi trattati a lezione. Ci sarà poi un colloquio orale sui contenuti delle lezioni e sui testi indicati in bibliografia.

Each week, the instructor will make the texts that will be discussed in class available in Moodle. The texts will be presented in class and then discussed with the students. They will constitute an essential part of the final exam, too. Students will also have the chance to present the projects for their papers in class.
In view of the oral exam, students will need to study one of the following books:
- David Owens, Reason without Freedom. London: Routledge, 2000.
- Rik Peels, Responsible Belief: A Theory in Ethics and Epistemology, New York: Oxford University Press, 2017.Students who will not attend class are asked to contact the instructor, who will recommend additional introductory texts on which they can prepare the exam.
Ogni settimana il docente metterà a disposizione su Moodle dei testi che saranno discussi a lezione. I testi saranno presentati a lezione e poi discussi assieme agli studenti e costituiranno parte integrante del programma d'esame. Gli studenti avranno anche la possibilità di presentare a lezione i loro elaborati scritti.
Per l'esame orale gli studenti dovranno inoltre prepararsi su un testo a scelta tra:
