Some familiarity with elementary set theory might be helpful (an introductory course in logic or philosophy of language should suffice), but the only real prerequisite for this course is the willingness to work hard during the course and acquire familiarity with some mathematical methods (which will be presented from scratch). In any case, students who did not attend any logic or philosophy of language course may contact the lecturer before the beginning of the course to check whether the course is suitable for them.

This course will introduce students to some key topics in philosophy of language, in line with the overall learning objectives of the MA program in Philosophy and the Philosophy International Curriculum to train the students' argumentative skills and their power of philosophical and logical analysis and to make them acquainted with a variety of philosophical disciplines.

Students completing this course are expected to:
(1) acquire a deep understanding of some key readings in the philosophy of language (knowledge and understanding)

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
The final exam will be an oral interview. Students will be graded based on their ability to clearly and precisely reconstruct the arguments developed in the readings (see the bibliography section) and their capacity to engage with such arguments. To be admitted to the oral exam, students must complete the written assignments available on Moodle. These assignments will not be graded, but they will serve as an opportunity for the students to interact with the lecturer and test their preparation.
L'esame finale consisterà in un esame orale. Verrà testata la capacità dello studente di ricostruire in modo chiaro e preciso le argomentazioni presenti nei testi d'esame (vedi la sezione bibliografia) e la sua capacità di interagire criticamente con tali argomentazioni. Per essere ammesso all'esame orale, lo studente deve completare le esercitazioni scritte present sulla piattaforma Moodle. Queste esercitazioni non saranno valutate, ma offrono allo studente un'opportunità di interagire con il docente e mettere alla prova la sua preparazione.

"What sort of thing is the meaning of a linguistic expression?" and "what is the rule that connects the meaning of a complex expression to the meanings of its parts?" are two profound philosophical questions.
As David Lewis explains in his classic paper "General Semantics", if we adopt a certain theoretical framework, the so-called referential framework, we can provide precise answers to those questions. You might find the idea of giving precise answers to philosophical questions either exciting ("precise answers, at last!") or outrageous ("philosophy is not about finding answers, it is about questioning received answers!"). Either way, I hope that at this point you want to know more about the referential framework – if only to prove it mistaken.
In the first two weeks of the course, we will study the referential framework in-depth, following Lewis' exposition in "General Semantics". In the following weeks, we will consider two potential challenges to certain philosophical assumptions that seem to be part of the referential framework: Dummett's manifestation challenge and Wittgenstein's rule-following considerations.
"Che cos’è il significato?" e "quale regola connette il significato di un'espressione complessa con il significato delle parole che la compongono?" sono due questioni centrali per la filosofia del linguaggio.
Come spiega David Lewis nel saggio "General Semantics", all'interno del quadro teorico chiamato semantica modellistica è possibile dare risposte precise a queste due domande. L'idea di dare risposte precise a domande filosofiche profonde può suonare entusiasmante ("finalmente delle risposte precise!") o scandalosa ("compito della filosofia non è trovare risposte, ma mettere in discussione le risposte comunemente accettate!"). In entrambi i casi, spero che a questo punto siate curiosi di scoprire cos'è la semantica modellistica.
Le prime due settimane saranno dedicate a uno studio approfondito della semantica modellistica. Seguiremo "General Semantics” di Lewis. Nelle settimane successive prenderemo in considerazione due potenziali sfide alla semantica modellistica: l'argomento della manifestazione di Dummett e le considerazioni sul seguire una regola di Wittgenstein.
