Obiettivi formativi
In line with the overall learning objectives of the MA program in Philosophy and the Philosophy International Curriculum, students will have to prove able to thoroughly read philosophical texts, to know and to present the main arguments in favour and against the theories and perspectives at stake and to discuss them critically. At the end of the course students will be able to master the logical space of the positions in question, and present them also in an interdisciplinary perspective (particularly in relation to cognitive sciences), and to master the technologies needed for such presentations.
Lo studente dovrà essere in grado di leggere approfonditamente testi filosofici, conoscere ed esporre i principali argomenti a favore delle teorie e dei punti di vista in esame e saperli discuterli criticamente. Ciò gli dovrà consentire di saper presentare tali teorie anche a fini didattici, in vista anche di collegamenti interdisciplinari con altri temi (specialmente in connessione alle scienze cognitive), e di dominare le tecnologie necessarie per tali presentazioni.

Students should be able to scrutinize philosophical texts written in English, to know and present the main arguments in favour of the examined theories and views, and to know how to discuss them critically. This will be accomplished via i) oral examinations, ii) students' presentations during the course, iii) quality of the students' questions on the scrutinized texts.
Lo studente dovrà essere in grado di leggere approfonditamente testi filosofici in lingua inglese, conoscere ed esporre i principali argomenti a favore delle teorie e dei punti di vista in esame e saperli discuterli criticamente. Ciò verrà fatto sia tenendo conto di i) esame orale finale, ii) seminari tenuti dagli studenti durante le lezioni, iii) domande da parte degli studenti sui testi in programma.

Lectures plus seminars with students' presentations. Depending on the circumstances, the module will be offered in blended mode (either online or in class).

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Oral examination plus possible evaluation of written questions on the students' part concerning the scrutinized texts. The evaluation will depend on three factors, in a non-exclusive alternative: i) the students' preparation on the programmed texts and their ability to face them critically, ii) their capacity to make an oral presentation on a paper, iii) their capacity to ask pertinent and penetrating questions on the featured texts. This will make it possible to test students' ability both with respect to the learning objectives and with respect to the expected results. Evaluation will be given on a mark scale starting from 30 (cum laude)
If the coronavirus emergency will surface again, exams will be moved online onto the webex platform
Esame orale ed eventuale valutazione di domande scritte da parte degli studenti sui testi in programma. La valutazione dipenderà dalla ponderazione dei tre seguenti fattori, in alternativa non esclusiva: i) grado di preparazione e di capacità di affrontare criticamente i testi, ii) capacità di presentazione orale di un articolo, iii) capacità di porre domande efficaci e pertinenti sui testi in programma. Questo consentirà di testare le abilità dello studente sia in relazione agli obiettivi formativi sia in relazione ai risultati attesi. La valutazione avrà luogo in trentesimi.
Se l'emergenza coronavirus ricomparirà, gli esami si sposteranno in modalità telematica sulla piattaforma webex.

The module will primarily concern the issue of whether there is a mark of the mental, i.e., a criterion accounting for the fact that whatever is mental is such, by focusing on the one hand on intentionalism, according to which the mark is intentionality, the property inherent primarily in mental states of being about something or having a content that makes them subject to semantic evaluation (Crane, Dretske, Tye), and on the other hand on conscientialism, according to which the mark has to do with phenomenal character, i.e., the what-is-like of mental states, which entails that intentionality is a phenomenological property (Kriegel, Mendelovici). Moreover, it will deal with the issue of whether it is possible to find the submark of the cognitive, i.e., what makes a process a cognitive process (Adams-Aizawa, Clark).
Il modulo prima di tutto si occuperà della questione se esiste un marchio del mentale, i.e., un criterio che spieghi perché ciò che è mentale è tale. Ci si concentrerà da un lato sull'intenzionalismo, per cui il marchio è l'intenzionalità, la proprietà in primo luogo di stati mentale di vertere su qualcosa o di avere un contenuto che li rende semanticamente valutabili (Crane, Dretske, Tye), e dall'altro lato sul coscienzialismo, per cui il marchio ha che fare col carattere fenomenico, i.e., l'effetto che fa l'intrattenere certi stati, che implica che l'intenzionalismo sia una proprietà fenomenologica (Kriegel, Mendelovici). Inoltre, il modulo si occuperà della questione se sia possibile che ci sia un sottomarchio del cognitivo, i.e., con ciò che fa di un processo un processo cognitivo (Adams-Aizawa, Clark).
