The course of History of philosophy I aims:
- to familiarize students with the purposes and methods of the history of philosophy;
- to provide a clear grasp of the main theories put forth by Russell in the period under consideration;
- to present the main phases of Russell's philosophical development and the reasons which underlie it;
- to evaluate Russell's role in the inception of of analytic philosophy.L'insegnamento di History of philosophy I mira a:
- familiarizzare gli studenti con gli scopi e i metodi della storia della filosofia;
- rendere possibile una comprensione adeguata delle principali teorie elaborate da Russell nel periodo preso in considerazione;
- presentare le fasi principali dell'evoluzione filosofica di Russell e le ragioni a essa sottese;

At the end of the course the students of History of philosophy I should:
- be familiar with the purposes and methods of the history of philosophy;
- have a good knowledge of some of Russell's main theories and be able to appreciate their role in the development of analytic philosophy;
- be able to reflect on the possible causes and reasons of Russell's recurrent philosophical turns.Alla fine del corso gli studenti di History of philosophy I dovranno:
- avere familiarità con gli scopi e i metodi della storia della filosofia;
- avere una buona conoscenza di alcune delle principali teorie di Russell ed essere in grado di riconoscere la loro importanza per lo sviluppo della filosofia analitica;

The course will be taught entirely online. Every week recorded lectures, materials to be read and discussed, possibly short assignments will be uploaded onto Moodle (accessible by clicking on the button at the bottom of this page). Some Webex meetings will be held to discuss the topics presented in class.
L'insegnamento sarà interamente online. Ogni settimana verranno caricati su Moodle le registrazioni delle lezioni, materiali da leggere e discutere, ed eventualmente brevi esercizi (potete accedere a Moodle cliccando sul bottone al fondo di questa pagina). Si terranno alcuni incontri tramite la piattaforma Webex per discutere degli argomenti trattati durante il corso.

Oral exam, assessing whether students have acquired a clear understanding of Russell's philosophy and its historical role. Grading based on a 30-point scale.
The exam will take place in classroom or via Webex depending on the health situation and classrooms available.
La verifica dei risultati dell'apprendimento avverrà mediante un esame orale, che consentirà di valutare se e in che modo lo studente avrà acquisito una visione chiara della filosofia di Russell e del suo ruolo storico. Voto in trentesimi.
L'esame avverrà in classe o tramite Webex, a seconda della situazione sanitaria e della disponibilità di aule.

Programma
The topic of the course is the philosophy of Bertrand Russell until the 1919 turn. Special attention will be devoted to the development of Russell's views and to the relations with the views of other philosophers. Russell's role in the inception of analytic philosophy will also be dealt with.
L'argomento dell'insegnamento è la filosofia di Bertrand Russell fino alla svolta del 1919. Sarà dedicata particolare attenzione allo sviluppo delle teorie di Russell e ai rapporti con le concezioni di altri filosofii. Si tratterà anche del ruolo di Russell nella formazione della tradizione filosofica analitica.
