Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento si propone di fornire un'introduzione al dibattito attorno all'etica della credenza. Oltre a chiarirne i concetti chiave, l'insegnamento mostrerà agli studenti come orientarsi all'interno di un dibattito filosofico.
The course aims to introduce students to the debate on the ethics of belief. In addition to claryfing the key concepts in this discussion, the course will show how one should approach a philosophical debate.

Modalità di insegnamento
L’insegnamento sarà erogato tramite delle videolezioni caricate sulla piattaforma Moodle, accompagnate poi da dellelezioni di discussione su WebEx.
Ogni settimana di lezione sarà formata da due videolezioni (corrispondenti alle lezioni del lunedì e del martedì) e da una lezione di discussione su WebEx. Quest’ultima si terrà ogni mercoledì dalle 16 alle 18 nella stanza virtuale del docente: https://unito.webex.com/meet/gabriele.gava
The course will be given trhough video-lectures avaliable in the online platform Moodle, followed by discussions on WebEx.
Each week will be formed by two video-lectures (corresponding to the classes of monday and tuesday) and a discussion on WebEx. This will be on wednesdays from 4pm to 6pm and will take place in the lecturer's virtual room: https://unito.webex.com/meet/gabriele.gava

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
L'esame avrà una parte scritta e una parte orale. Gli studenti dovranno preparare un breve elaborato scritto (4.000 parole) su problemi e testi trattati a lezione. Ci sarà poi un colloquio orale sui contenuti delle lezioni e sui testi indicati in bibliografia.
The exam will have a written and an an oral part. Students will have to write a short paper (4.000 parole) on themes and texts discussed in class. Additionally, there will be an oral exam on the contents of the lectures and on the texts indicated in the bibliography.

L'etica della credenza
La domanda centrale dell'etica della credenza concerne quali siano le norme (epistemiche, prudenziali, morali?) che governano la formazione delle credenze. Il dibattito è diviso tra chi sosiene una posizione evidenzialista (la quale afferma che le credenze sono razionali solo quando sono commisurate all'evidenza) e chi invece difende il non-evidenzialismo (questo afferma che esistono dei casi in cui è legittimo credere in assenza di evidenza a favore di ciò che crediamo). L'insegnamento partirà dall'analisi di alcuni classici che hanno difeso forme di evidenziialismo (Locke, Clifford) e non-evidenzialismo (Pascal, Kant, James), per poi spostarsi al dibattito contemporaneo.
The ethics of belief
The central question of the ethcis of belief concerns the norms (epistemic, prudential, moral?) that govern the formation of beliefs. The debate is divided between evidentialists (who maintains that beliegs are only rational when they are supported by evidence) and non-evidentialists (who argue that there are cases in which it is legitimate to believe in absence of evidence in support of our belief). The course will start with an analysis of some classic figures who have defended forms of evidentialisms (Locke, Clifford) and non-evidentialism (Pascal, Kant, James). We will then move to the consideration of the current debate.

Ogni settimana il docente metterà a disposizione su Moodle dei testi che saranno discussi a lezione (per maggiori informazioni su quali testi verranno discussi, si rimanda al file di informazione presente nella pagina Moodle del corso). I testi saranno presentati nelle videolezioni e poi discussi assieme agli studenti nella sessione Webex, nella quale gli studenti avranno anche la possibilità di presentare brevemente il progetto dei loro elaborati scritti.
Per l'esame orale gli studenti dovranno inoltre prepararsi su un testo a scelta tra:

- Earl Conee and Richard Feldman, Evidentialism: Essays in epistemology, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2004e un testo a scelta tra:
- Berislav Marušić, Evidence and agency: norms of belief for promising and resolving, New York: Oxford, 2015
- Miriam McCormick, Believing against the evidence: Agency and the ethics of belief, New York: Routledge, 2015.Nel caso di difficoltà nel reperire i testi d'esame, sarà premura del docente proporre delle alternative.
Gli studenti non frequentanti sono pregati di contattare il docente che indicherà loro ulteriori testi introduttivi su cui prepararsi.
Each week, the instructor will make the texts taht will be discussed in class available in Moodle (for details see the file with information uploaded in Moodle). The texts will be presented in the video-lessons and then discussed in a Webex session with the students. In the latter, students will have the chance to present the projects for their papers.
In view of the oral exam, students will need to study one of the following books:

Students who will not attend class are asked to contact the instructor, who will recommend additional introductory texts on which they can prepare the exam.
