Obiettivi formativi
In line with the overall learning objectives of the MA program in Philosophy and the Philosophy International Curriculum, this course will provide:
knowledge of classical texts in the history of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century philosophy;
understanding and contextualization of each text in its historical and theoretical dimensions, to be achieved through guided reading, discussion, and individual study;
development of comprehension and critical skills in the analysis of the texts, especially of the ability to recognize and assess philosophical arguments and argumentative styles in them.
L'insegnamento concorre al conseguimento degli obiettivi formativi del Corso di Laurea magistrale in Filosofia e del Curriculum Internazionale in Filosofia fornendo:
conoscenza di testi classici della storia della filosofia dell'Ottocento e del primo Novecento;
comprensione e inquadramento di ciascun testo nella sua dimensione storica e teorica, attraverso la lettura guidata, la discussione e lo studio individuale;
sviluppo delle capacità di comprensione e analisi critica dei testi, in particolare della capacità di riconoscere e valutare gli argomenti e le modalità argomentative presenti in essi.

36-hour course available, 30% of which will consist in seminar activities. Those who cannot participate in these activities, will have the possibility to take an equivalent written assignment, on which they will receive feedback from the instructor.

The oral exam will test students' knowledge and understanding of the course materials, their capacity to situate the primary sources in their historical context and to analyze their philosophical contents, the ability to engage with the philosophical problems discussed during the course in a critical way, the acquisition of argumentative skills.
The grade from 1/30 to a maximum of 30/30 cum laude will depend for its 70% on the oral exam and for its 30% on an oral presentation on a selected topic or, alternatively, on a written short essay.
The exam materials will be the same for those who cannot attend classes.
L'esame orale verificherà la conoscenza e la comprensione degli argomenti dell'insegnamento, la capacità di contestualizzare storicamente le fonti primarie e di analizzarne i contenuti filosofici, l'abilità di affrontare criticamente i problemi filosofici discussi, lo sviluppo di abilità argomentative.
Il voto in trentesimi dipenderà per il 70% dall'esame orale e per il 30% da una presentazione orale su un argomento a scelta o, in alternativa, da una presentazione scritta nella forma di un saggio breve.
Il programma d'esame sarà lo stesso per chi non ha la possibilità di frequentare.

The course will offer an overview of major themes of German neo-Kantianism, from its beginnings in the 'back to Kant' movement - initiated in the mid 1850s by the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz, and taken up by philosophers such as Otto Liebmann, Friedrich Albert Lange, and Hermann Lotze - to the develoment of the two main neo-Kantian Schools, the Marburg School (Hermann Cohen, Paul Natorp, Ernst Cassirer) and the Southwest School (Wilhelm Windelband, Heinrich Rickert, Emil Lask) in the 1870s-1910s. Selected programmatic texts from these authors available in updated English translations will be analyzed and placed in the context of the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century debates on such topics as the status of philosophy and its relation to the sciences, the transcendental method, the development of the theory of culture, and the foundation of the human sciences.
L'isengamento fornirà un quadro dei temi principali del neokantismo tedesco, dalle sui esordi nel movimento del 'ritorno a Kant' - avviato negli anni '50 dell'Ottocento dallo scienziato Hermann von Helmholtz, e ripreso in seguito da filosofi come Otto Liebmann, Friedrich Albert Lange e Hermann Lotze - allo sviluppo delle due principali scuole neokantiane, la scuola di Marburgo (Hermann Cohen, Paul Natorp, Ernst Cassirer) e la scuola del Baden (Wilhelm Windelband, Heinrich Rickert, Emil Lask) tra gli anni '70 dell'Ottocento agli anni '10 del Novecento. Una selezione di scritti programmatici di questi autori, disponibili in traduzione inglese, verrà analizzata e contestualizzata all'interno dei dibattiti dell'Ottocento e dei primi del Novecento su problemi come lo statuto della filosofia nel suo rapporto con le scienze, il metodo trascendentale, lo sviluppo della teoria della cultura, la fondazione delle scienze dello spirito.
