Oggetto:

L’insegnamento di History of ideas mira a:
– fornire un esempio di come alcuni concetti fondamentali nella storia della filosofia si sono evoluti nel corso del tempo;
– mostrare come alcuni concetti tecnici della filosofia abbiano subito cambiamenti profondi in seguito alla loro applicazione in discipline differenti o in contesti culturali differenti;
– familiarizzare gli studenti con i metodi e i problemi della storia delle idee.

The course of History of ideas aims:
– to provide an example of how some fundamental concepts in the history of philosophy have developed through time;
– to find out how philosophical technical concepts may undergo deep changes when used in different disciplines or in different cultural contexts;
– to familiarize students with the methods and problems of the history of ideas.

Alla fine del corso gli studenti dovranno:
– avere una visione chiara di almeno alcuni momenti della storia della distinzione tra universali e particolari;
– avere acquisito familiarità con i metodi e i problemi della storia della idee;
– essere in grado di scrivere una breve relazione dopo aver individuato un argomento appropriato.

At the end of the course students should:
– have a clear view of at least some moments of the history of the distinction between universals and particulars;
– be acquainted with the methodologies of the history of ideas;
– be able to devise an appropriate paper topic and to write a brief essay on it.

Lezioni frontali, durante le quali sarà dato molto spazio alla presentazione, commento e discussione dei testi filosofici, anche con l’ausilio di materiale didattico supplementare.
Alcune lezioni alla fine dell’insegnamento saranno dedicate alla discussione di possibili argomenti per le relazioni che gli studenti dovranno scrivere.

Frontal lessons, during which much space will be given to the presentation, comment and discussion of philosophical texts, also with the aid of supplementary teaching material.
Some classes at the end of the course will be devoted to the discussion of possible topics for the papers to be written by the students.

Relazione scritta (50% del voto finale) + esame orale (50% del voto finale).
Agli studenti è richiesto di scrivere una breve relazione (circa 5000 parole) su un argomento da concordarsi con il docente; il saggio dovrà essere consegnato almeno una settimana prima della data dell’esame orale.
L’esame orale riguarderà tutti gli argomenti e i testi trattati a lezione; una parte dell’esame sarà inoltre dedicata alla discussione della relazione presentata dallo studente.
Per gli studenti non frequentanti, nell’esame orale gli argomenti e i testi trattati a lezione saranno sostituiti da una scelta di almeno due tra i testi elencati come “Letteratura secondaria particolarmente rilevante per l’insegnamento” (cfr. Testi consigliati e bibliografia); almeno uno dei testi dovrà essere una monografia.
Anche agli studenti non frequentanti è richiesto di scrivere una breve relazione secondo le stesse modalità indicate sopra; in particolare, essi dovranno contattare il docente per concordare un argomento appropriato.

Paper (50% of the final grade) + oral exam (50% of final grade)
Students are required to write a brief essay (approximately 5000 words) on a topic to be arranged with the lecturer, and to be submitted at least one week before the date of the oral examination.
The oral examination will concern all the topics and the texts dealt with during the course; a part of the exam will be devoted to a discussion of the essay submitted by the student.
For students who cannot attend the course, the topics and the texts dealt with during the course are to be replaced in the oral examination by a choice of at least two among the items listed as “Secondary literature that is especially relevant to the course” (cf. Testi consigliati e bibliografia); at least one of the items has to be a monograph.
Students who cannot attend the course are required to write a brief essay according to the same guidelines stated above; in particulare, they are requested to contact the lecturer to arrange for an appropriate topic.

L’insegnamento mira a indagare le vicissitudini della distinzione tra universale e particolare (o individuo) in tempi e contesti diversi lungo la storia della filosofia. Saranno esaminati numerosi episodi significativi di questa storia, con una particolare attenzione per l’interazione tra la continuità della tradizione filosofica e i cambiamenti che differenti cornici culturali hanno imposto alle nozioni in questione.

The course aims to investigate the vicissitudes of the distinction between universal and particular (or individual) in different times and contexts throughout the history of philosophy. Several significant episodes of this history will be examined, from Plato to contemporary thought, with a special attention on the interplay between the continuity of the philosophical tradition and the changes that different cultural frameworks forced upon the relevant notions.
