This course is an introduction to the theory of evolution together with some of its philosophical implications.

Students who successfully complete the course will come to know the Darwinian theory, its revolutionary impact, and some of its main philosophical implications. They will learn to articulate the main principles of the theory, to reconstruct its argumentative structure as well as to analyse the main debates that it still engenders today. The competences acquired through the course will include the capability of autonomously examining and evaluating the relevant topics as treated in the literature. Finally, the acquired knowledge will provide the students with the requisite conceptual tools for approaching critically the multifarious aspects of the theory of evolution by natural selection.
Gli studenti e le studentesse che avranno completato con successo il corso avranno appreso i principi e la struttura della teoria dell'evoluzione per selezione naturale e sapranno valutarne l'impatto e discuterne alcune tra le più importanti implicazioni filosofiche attraverso i dibattiti che la animano a tutt'oggi. Le competenze acquisite durante l'insegnamento comprenderanno la capacità di esaminare criticamente le questioni trattate nella letteratura di riferimento oltre che eventualmente proporre e articolare nuove questioni.

The course is articulated into two parts. The first part, which introduces the core topic of the course, will be deliveder in frontal mode using slides. In the second part, classes will take the form of seminar-style group discussions: the texts in the program will be analyzed starting from the presentations prepared by students.
La prima parte dell'insegnamento, che introduce all'argomento generale e fornisce le basi per affrontare la seconda, sarà in forma di lezioni frontali con l'ausilio di slides. La seconda parte si svolgerà in modo seminariale: i testi in programma verranno discussi a partire dalle presentazioni preparate dagli studenti.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Course assessment will be through an oral presentation and a written essay. Students will have to (i) present a paper to the class in an articulate and clear manner, using the appropriate terminology, and (ii) write a short paper on one of the topics of the course, applying the notions and skills acquired, including mastery of reasoning techniques and terminology.
Because of the nature (partially in seminar format) of the course, attending the course is strongly recommended. However, students who cannot attend the course may write to the instructor in order to decide together the texts to study for the exam.La verifica dei risultati dell'apprendimento avverrà attraverso una presentazione orale e un saggio scritto. Gli studenti e le studentesse dovranno (i) presentare un saggio alla classe dimostrando di saper esporre e discutere in maniera articolata e chiara, e (ii) scrivere un breve saggio su uno degli argomenti dell'insegnamento, dimostrando di saper applicare le nozioni e gli strumenti acquisiti, padroneggiare lessico adeguato e tecniche di ragionamento e argomentazione.
Data l'impostazione parzialmente seminariale, la frequenza è caldamente consigliata. Tuttavia, chi fosse impossibilitato a frequentare il corso può scrivere alla docente per concordare un programma d'esame.- Oggetto:

Evolutions
This 36h course is articulated into two main parts. The first part is an overview of the theory of evolution (Lamarck, Darwin, the New Synthesis). In the second part some of its philosophical implications will be addressed through the discussion of texts and students’ oral presentations.

L'insegnamento, della durata di 36 ore, è articolato in due parti. La prima costituisce una panoramica della teoria dell'evoluzione attraverso un confronto tra Lamarck e Darwin e l'esposizione degli aspetti principali della Sintesi Moderna. Nella seconda parte verranno affrontate alcune tra le implicazioni filosofiche della teoria darwiniana attraverso la discussione dei testi e le presentazioni orali degli studenti e delle studentesse.
