The course introduces students to the groundwork of epistemic rationality and social epistemology. The students will then learn to apply these tools to various social epistemic roles (e.g., experts, laypeople, teachers, students). Students will also learn how to understand epistemic normativity under non-ideal conditions.

Programma
The course is taught by the Visiting Professor Thomas Grundmann from the University of Cologne.
Part 1: Epistemological and conceptual foundations
Week 1: How epistemic reasons and defeaters determine rational judgment. Introduction to the main theories.
Week 2: A historical and systematic approach to the understanding of experts and epistemic authority. The historical part focusses on ancient and medieval notions and on Gadamer. Within the current debate, Linda Zagzebski’s Preemtion View of epistemic authority is at center stage. This view claims that laypeople should defer to the authority and stop thinking for themselves.
Part 2: The Preemption Model of Epistemic Authority: Motivation and Challenges
Week 3: Two main arguments for the Preemption View of epistemic authority (Keren’s and Zagzebski’s) will be reconstructed and critically discussed.
Week 4: My more recent argument from Higher-Order Defeat will be introduced and discussed in the light of its main challenges.
Part 3: Applications of the Preemption Modell of Epistemic Authority
Week 5: Introduction to epistemic autonomy, thinking for oneself and understanding. Can they be integrated into the Preemption View?
Week 6: Discussion of the role of expert authorities for democratic policy making. Ideas of
Hannah Arendt, Habermas, Helen Landemore and others will be discussed and related to the Preemption View.

Mixture of lecture and seminar. Week 1 will introduce basic epistemological tools and theories ex-cathedra. However, students will have the opportunity to test their understanding through interactive course elements.
Active participation is required for passing the course.

Essay (ca. 3,000 words) and written exam. These two elements count equally toward the final grade (45% each). The remaining 10% of the grade is determined on the basis of contributions in class.
