Il corso si propone di introdurre il tema dell'applicazione di tecniche e metodi di 'distant reading' in storia della filosofia.
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the application of 'distant reading' methods and techniques to the history of philosophy.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
Alla fine del corso gli studenti dovranno:
- avere un'idea chiara di che cosa sia il distant reading di Franco Moretti in storia della letteratura;
- essere in grado di ricostruire da un punto di vista filosofico (metodologico ed epistemologico) alcuni apetti del lavoro di Moretti e di alcuni autori che Moretti considera come modelli (da Braudel a Wallerstein a Lukács);
- aver compreso in che cosa consiste, e quali peculiarità presenta, il tentativo di applicare il distant reading in storia della filosofia.
At the end of the course students should:
- have a clear view of Franco Moretti's distant reading approach in literary history;
- be able to reconstruct from a philosophical (i.e., methodological and epistemological) point of view some aspects of Moretti's work and of the work of Moretti's main models (from Braudel and Wallerstein to Lukács);
- have a clear understanding of the project of applying distant reading to the history of philosophy.

A written exam concerning all the topics and texts dealt with during the course: 3-4 open questions to be answered in class, 3-4 open questions to be answered at home.

Programma
Il corso verrà diviso in tre parti. Una descrizione del distant reading di Franco Moretti in storia della letteratura. La discussione di alcuni aspetti metodologici ed epistemologici del lavoro di Moretti e di quello di alcuni autori che Moretti considera come modelli (da Braudel a Wallerstein, fino a Lukács). E infine la presentazione, per lo più attraverso esempi e case-studies, del progetto di applicare il distant reading anche in storia della filosofia.
The course is divided into three parts. First, a description of Franco Moretti's distant reading approach in literary history. Second, a discussion of some methodological and espistemological issues related to Moretti's work and to the work of some authors (such as for example Braudel, Wallerstein and Lukacs) that are taken as models by Moretti. Third, a presentation, mainly by means of examples and case-studies, of the attempt of applying distant reading techniques to the history of philosophy.
