The course is preferably aimed at students who have already attended a course in aesthetics. Yet this is not a necessary requirement. The aim is to discuss some of the main themes of philosophy of music.

In line with the overall learning objectives of the MA program in Philosophy and the Philosophy International Curriculum, this course will discuss some of the key themes of philosophy of music with particular attention to the relation between music and morality.
In conformità agli obiettivi formativi del programma di Laurea magistrale in filosofia e del Philosophy International Curriculum, lo scopo dell'insegnamento è quello di discutere alcuni tra i principali temi della filosofia della musica con particolare attenzione alla relazione tra musica e moralità.

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(1) be acquainted with some of the main topics of philosophy of music and, in particular,with the relation between music and morality;
(2) Know crucial aspects of modern and contemporary philosophy of music;
(3) be able to analyze and understand philosophical texts on music, discussing the arguments they present;
(4) clearly explain the different philosophical positions.Alla fine dell'insegnamento gli studenti dovranno:
(1) sapere quali sono alcuni dei principali temi della filosofia della musica.Sarà approfondita, in particolare, la relazione tra musica e moralità;
(2) conoscere aspetti cruciali della filosofia della musica moderna e contemporanea;
(3) poter analizzare e comprendere testi filosofici sulla musica, valutando le argomentazioni che essi presentano;

Programma
The course is articulated into 36 teaching hours (equivalent to 6 CFU). It has two parts. In the first, shorter, part the main topics of the current debate in philosophy of music will be introduced: in particular, the concept of music, musical ontology, the relationship between music and emotions and the question of musical meaning. In the second and longer part, the relation between music and morality iwill be addressed through discussions of texts and student reports.
IL'insegnamento è di 36 ore (6 CFU) ed è diviso in due parti. Nella prima e più breve parte verranno introdotti i principali temi dell'attuale dibattito in filosofia della musica e, in particolare, il concetto di musica, l'ontologia musicale, il rapporto tra musica ed emozioni e la questione del significato musicale. Nella seconda e più lunga parte verrà approfondita la relazione tra musica e moralità attraverso la discussione dei testi e le relazioni degli studenti e delle studentesse.

The course is of 36 hours and is in two parts. The first part (6-8-teaching hours) will introduce the core topics of the course. Lectures will be accompanied by presentations through slides. In the second part (28-30 teaching hours) class sessions will take the form of seminar-style group discussions: featured texts will be analyzed starting from the reports prepared by students.

L'insegnamento è di 36 ore ed è articolato in una parte introduttiva e in una parte principale. La prima parte del corso (6-8 ore) ha lo scopo di introdurre gli argomenti in programma e si svolgerà in modalità frontale, anche mediante l'uso di slides. La seconda parte (28-30 ore) si svolgerà in modo seminariale: i testi in programma verranno discussi a partire dalle relazioni preparate dagli studentie e delle studentesse.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
(A) Besides evaluating students' presentations and discussions of texts in class, (B) acquired knowledge will be assessed through a written examination in which open-ended questions regarding the topic and the texts of the course will be asked to students.
(A) Final grades will vary depending on: 1) the students' degree of critical understanding; 2) their language appropriateness; 3) their ability to formulate relevant questions.
(B) The written examination will verify: a) the knowledge of philosophy of music and the ability to analyze philosophical texts; b) the understanding of the philosophical topics discussed; c) the skill in presenting philosophical positions making use of musical examples.The examination will be in-person, but there may be variations as the Covid-19 pandemic evolves.
Evaluation of performance will be based on a grading scale of 30 points(A) Oltre a valutare le presentazioni e le discussioni dei testi in aula, (B) le conoscenze acquisite saranno accertate mediante un esame consistente in una prova scritta con domande a risposta aperta, sui testi e i temi in programma.
(A) La valutazione dipenderà 1) dal grado comprensione critica dei testi; 2) dalla capacità di esposizione; 3) dalla capacità di porre domande efficaci e pertinenti sui testi in programma.
(B) Mediante l'esame scritto sarà verificato che gli studenti siano in possesso di: a) conoscenze di filosofia della musica e capacità di analisi di un testo; b) comprensione degli argomenti filosofici presi in esame; c) capacità di esporre al docente le posizioni filosofiche anche con esempi musicali.L'esame sarà in presenza, ma potranno esserci variazioni in base all'evoluzione della pandemia covid-19.
Il voto dell'esame è espresso in trentesimi.- Oggetto:
